My recent dalliance with black and white has ended. In ‘This is being an Entrepreneur’, we return to color, which is fitting giving the colors of Dos’ Texas Salt bag.
I wrote in February about the incident which inspired this episode of a series we will revisit. After approving an appropriately sized prototype of Texas Salt, the printer mistakenly reverted to a smaller size, and printed 10k bags.
This is truly being an entrepreneur: everything that can go wrong will go wrong. It’ll be up to you, in this case me, to create the solution for problems you did everything to avoid.
Our desire to create this series was the result of frustrations with a lack of growth on the Mills McQueen channel.
I often find myself paying too much attention to views. This leads to hours on YouTube, studying the work of those with subscribers and high view counts.
There are some trends, some niches that youtube tends to prioritize. One of which is the quick cutting, highly stylized vlog.
I’m not above finding an audience on that platform, so I set out to fit into an existing niche by depicting the challenges and nuances of being an entrepreneur.
This meant less dramatization and script writing, more recording and creating the drama from the real events.
Fortunately, early in the production, I felt quite disingenuous, despite it being a real life, documentary style.
After we recorded the mundane, I found myself writing scripts, location scouting, set designing and performing, to create the drama.
Documentary or narrative, this film at its core is a story about perseverance and discipline. It begins with a cinematic opening of two Spanish speaking non actors performing as actors.
We decided to keep the two styles, and thus there is some talking to camera and cinematic performances, which accurately represents the paradox of being an entrepreneur:
Creating something novel in a repetitive world.
