Watch 'Es Mexico Mágico, Mi Amor' here.
Moments ago we released a short film on this channel, ‘Es Mexico Magico, Mi Amor’.
‘Mexico Magico’ or 'Pueblos Magicos,' is a program in Mexico that recognizes towns for their magical qualities – because of the beauty, the historical importance, or natural wonders.
Pueblo Magico is a mark of excellence in Mexico and Mexico Magico is an anecdotal way to summarize all of the magic that can occur in various parts of this magnificent country.
The short film attempts to encapsulate the magic of destined lovers, initially torn by the female lover’s desire for a more emotionally fulfilling and complete bond, which is personified by her fleeing the busy and chaotic world of downtown Mexico City.
The motivation for the female lover’s character is subtextual – meaning neither character speaks expositionally about the reason for her dissatisfaction and leaving.
In the beginning of the film, the character played by the immaculate Emily Sousa, leaves a note for her lover, played by me, to find her in the mountains of Tepoztlan.
Without hesitation, the male lover packs his things and departs for the mountains, ruminating through narration on his desire to find her and to be with her.
In the film, he will travel to various Pueblo Magicos to find her, reminded of the beauty and love they’ve created in these towns along the way.
I often feel like a complex and haunted man. This is why I seek refuge in art, in film, and in creation.
I made this film for a number of subconscious reasons that will only become conscious through the output of releasing the film.
And I made this film for reasons that are well beyond conscious.
The woman that I love and I were traveling in Mexico, the place we fell in love six years before. I desired a filmic record of our being together – a cinematic retelling of our exceptional, life affirming, and complicated love.
I wanted to collaborate and create this film together, every frame being a painting, and to share the joys of creating art as one.
I believe we accomplished all of the above.
Much like the characters do in the film, Emily and I had separated twice before – for lengthy periods of time – only to find each other again.
Now, some 9 months since production wrapped, and that trip together to Mexico, we are apart again.
Art imitates life, just as life aspires to be art.
It’s a privilege to create art.
Our world is infected by frivolous content, nonsensical 6 inch frames of frenetic nobodies, given an opportunity to voice uneducated opinions by an addictive and destructive algorithm – conveniently pocket sized and anxiety inducing.
This output only increases in superfluous importance because those that can’t create consume, and do so unconsciously, diminishing their desires for earned dopamine with each aimless scroll for meaning and feeling.
Our phones have destroyed our sense of self.
Man’s inability to put down social media and pick up the pen, the book, or the camera and dedicate oneself to creation that impacts the zeitgeist and connects with the greater consciousness will allow for something inhuman to become the creator.
The question is asked, “when?” yet the answer is our present: we are controlled by intelligence that is not our own, infatuated with lives we don’t live, and willing to replace our creations with soulless efficiency.
This film, and all art that I create, is another paddle up stream, against the immense and powerful flow of mediocrity and numbness that defines our current culture.
I refuse the unconscious consumption of content. I strive for art that challenges ideologies and connects with communities I’ve never visited.
I create art that will out live me, for art is timeless – even as its created to reflect the times.
In the time I made this short, I was in love with the world’s most special lady, my muse, and the stealer of each scene in this film.
It was my privilege to create art with her and it’s a privilege to create art, not because only a few privileged people can – but because so few will sacrifice everything to create their something.
This is my something, made with my someone, for everyone to enjoy.
Thank you.
